Day 9. What virtues do you value in yourself?

It's hard to see virtues in yourself (and very easy to spot the faults) to be honest, have you ever really sat down and worked out what your virtues are? So here's mine, particularly those I've learnt I've had since becoming a Mum.

- Confident - I've always forced myself to put aside things I'm scared of and appear confident. One of the girls from my NCT class said she knew I'd have a relatively easy birth because I was so confident about it all. I don't think I was particularly confident, but she was terrified so I must have appeared much more confident then I actually was.

- Optimistic - I'm a glass half full girl and will always look for the good and shiny things in people.

- Competitive - This is a family trait, some people would see this as not at all virtuous, but I love being competitive. I love a good game, I always play by the rules, hate cheaters and love the thrill of winning fair and square.

- Emotionally Strong - any new Mum can look back over the first few months and think, wow I'm stronger then I thought I was, how else do we get through the sleepless nights without drawing on an inner strength?

Le Weekend

We had an extra long Bank Holiday Weekend, Daddy took Friday off so we all had four days together. This was foiled slightly by the boy getting nappy rash. Wow. He's not had nappy rash before, yes it's been a bit red and I've slathered on the Sudocrem, but this was something horrible, his poor little behind was red raw, he couldn't sit in the highchair and was all whimpery and morose :(
So the plan to take him to an animal park didn't go ahead, instead we went straight down to Kent to stay with T's parents and bought out Boots for remedies. The Sudocrem wasn't working, I googled cures and everyone seemed to have a different remedy, one person would say that one thing was fantastic and another not, and someone else would say the complete opposite. In the end we used Metanium (but also bought Bepanthen) and it helped clear it up. Four nights later it's still a little sore but much better.

That was the bad part of the weekend but on the plus side:

Charlie got his third tooth - top left
He started walking on his own, constantly testing himself with going a little further each time
Nana and Grandad have a new kitten (Reuben) which Charlie LOVED
Luckily the kitten seemed to LOVE Charlie too, and kept coming back to play
We went to a city farm and saw lambs, chickens, cows, a pony and more (another post for these photos)

And speaking of photos, my camera broke and it wouldn't focus properly. I was so upset I've had it for years and can't really afford to replace it, but luckily on the way to get it looked at I managed to fix it - yay! So hooray for magically fixing cameras and boo that I didn't get nearly enough cute baby and kitten photos.

 Reuben the kitten

Little face in awe of the kitten - he kept saying "cat cat cat"

Just after he learnt that kittens have claws (luckily no really injury, more shock then anything)

Fun fun fun

Gypsies, soldiers and bisexual poets

Nope these aren't the things I want C-bear to be when he grows up! They're the main protagonists in the last three books I've read, and seriously, all three books have been gems. Let's start with the Gypsies.

The Invisible Ones is the new novel by Stef Penney (author of The Tenderness of Wolves) and it's publishing this September. The book gives a small snapshopt of the life of English Gypsies (think My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding but not so OTT). It follows a private investigator who is asked to enter the secretive world of the travellers to find out what happened to a young gypsy woman who went missing years earlier.

Publishing in August, Blow on a Dead Man's Embers is the second novel from Mari Strachan (The Earth Hums in B flat) and it's set in Wales in the years following WWI. Beautifully written this book takes ordinary life and makes it shine. We follow Non as she tries to find out what's wrong with her shell-shocked husband when he returns from war full of secrets and dread.

The one I've been waiting for and am so excited to have a proof copy of is the new Alan Hollinghurst, The Stranger's Child. When I read the synopsis I immediately thought of Ian McEwan's Atonement, but it's a many more layered beast to read. The book centres around the short and seemingly brilliant life of Cecil Valence and the amazing impact he makes on the Sawle family when middle brother George brings him home for a visit from university. The book jumps decades and shows how the visit in 1913 has a lasting impact on those involved. Publishing in July, if you like a literary read, this is one not to be missed.

And don't you think all these jackets are great? I love the spooky, misty empty boat, the simple heart-melting image of the embracing soldier and the sheet clean-cut edges of the maze.

Charlie - what you're like as a one year old

My little one year old is so fun to be around, he's almost always smiley and just wants to be involved in everything.

Immunisations? He's had his 12 months jabs - 3 injections, 1st was fine but tears for the 2nd and 3rd.

Eating? He's become a bit fussy but that's mostly to do with frustration at not being able to feed himself. At nursery he no longer has pureed food supplied by us, but eats the same as all the other kids. Today he had:

Breakfast - Weetabix
Lunch - Fish fingers, green peas and mashed potato
           - Yogurt
Tea - Sandwiches - chicken and ham
       - Cucumber, oranges, bananas and pear

When he gets home we have toast and marmite and then just before bed we have porridge or yogurt. He has three 250ml cups of baby milk a day along with a mixture of water, watered down orange or apple juice or watered down smoothie. He loves homemade chicken lasagna and petit filous yogurts.

Sleeping? He is finally pretty much sleeping through at night, sometimes he wakes up really early - 5am, but usually it's 6.30am.

Speaking? He says Mama, Dada, Cat, Nonono

Walking? Soooo close, he cruises everywhere and takes a few steps alone. We play a game in the evening where Mama and Daddy sit opposite each other with legs stretched out an toes touching and Charlie takes stumbley steps between us.

Toys? His favourites are the foam numbers from our hopscotch floor tiles, ELC cars to play with in the toy garage, birthday plane and digger, and the xylophone. He's gone off the blue cow a little, he no longer carries it around with him, but when he spots it he will play with it.

Blue

We're linking up with the Paper Mama's Photo Challenge: Blue

This is one of my favourite pictures of C-bear, we used it for our birth congratulations thank you cards. He still has the blue blankie, it's so soft and snuggly we use it all the time.

Ssshhh Mummy's tired

I am exhausted, who knew having a one year old could be so tiring?? I expected the first year to be tiring, lack of sleep, midnight (1am, 2am, 3am) feeds and recovering from the birth, but now it's a whole new level of exhaustion. Yes he sleeps through most nights now, yes I hardly breastfeed at all (just one bedtime feed and we're phasing that out), yes my body has had a year to repair itself from the stress of pregnancy and birth. I'm getting more sleep then I did this time last year, but I'm using up so much more energy. C-bear is v nearly walking, he can do a few steps by himself and is constantly crawling and cruising - who knew a crawling baby could be so nippy? I'm constantly watching him, running after him, calling him back and he just doesn't seem to stop. He naps for an hour at most and then he's up and at them for the rest of the day. I love this phase, he's so excited by everything, I could just do with more time to sleep and time to sit down and have a coffee.

P.S. The answer to my 'who knew' questions - I guess every mother out there knows, you just don't appreciate exactly how tiring having a baby is until you've got one.

P.P.S. But I just can't resist doing absolutely anything for this little face.

New project

I've been thinking about doing this for a while but am now about to start making Charlie a 1st year scrapbook. I've kept loads of things - all the scans, birth congratulations cards, newspapers from his birth day, even things like the wrapper from his first Easter egg and a leaf he played with in the Autumn.

At the moment I have all of this in a box, but I've bought a big heavy scrap book, printed off a load of photos and am ready to start.

What have you done with your baby's first year bits and bobs? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Day 7. Do you believe in the "cry until he sleeps" method?

I wish I did, but I don't. I have a friend who used it really early on with her baby and it worked amazingly well, I was so jealous. But I've read so much about the pros and cons and although the pros make sense, in reality I just can't follow it. I'll let Charlie cry for up to five mins but if he continues after that I'll go in and calm him.

At 11 months Charlie finally started sleeping through the night, so I'm happy not to have put him through the misery of the cry-to-sleep method. Yes, he still has some nights where he wakes up once or twice, but he now sleeps through most nights.

There was a time a couple of months ago I almost tried the cry-to-sleep method, I bought a Gina Ford book and put some of her tips into place without actually going as far as crying to sleep. Now Charlie has 3 drinks of milk a day, we no longer use the night light and he has a strict bedtime routine which means he's asleep by 7.15pm.

First steps

The boy took his first unaided steps yesterday. 3 little steppy steps all in a row, I can't believe my baby is growing up so quickly. We met two Mummy friends and their boys and Charlie, in his lust for another baby's dummy (weird because he doesn't have one) made 3 short steps and fell into my arms.

I didn't get it on camera but here are some others from the day.

Day 6. Your most embarrassing moment

I'm trying desperately to think of one of those embarrassing moments you see on TV shows or in films where it's terribly embarrassing but also totally hilarious to the listener (mistaken identities, mis-heard sentences etc etc). But to be honest I don't have anything like that, my embarrassing moments tend to be really mundane, like asking someone on the phone to repeat themselves 4 times because I can't understand them, or replying to a question that's clearly been asked to someone else...

...So instead I'll link you to Failbook, which is one of my favourite sites to visit for a pick-me-up and is usually full of completely embarrassing moments!

De ja vu

De-ja-vu, what do you think? Four-week old Max came to Charlie's birthday BBQ wearing one of C-bear's teeny weeny baby-gros, and it just happened that Charlie had worn the same one to Uncle Andy's birthday BBQ almost a year earlier when he was two weeks old. These photos of their doting Nana make me smile - already these cousins are so close!

PS - Charlie was so sweet with his little cousin, he was so interested in watching the baby and very gently stroked his foot!

Friday's Baby Picnic

We were so lucky with the weather, it was a gorgeous day. We had 6 babies and their Mamas and the picnic was so fun. I had baked a mountain of cupcakes including baby friendly Dutch Apple and lemon & orange and for the Mamas we had chocolate & vanilla and chocolate & orange. I also made picnic bread and everyone brought along a little something.

Charlie got lots of presents, everyone was so generous, and he loved crawling around the picnic blankets and stealing sharing toys and food with the other babies.

May Bank Holiday Weekend

We spent the extra long BHW visiting my parents in Wiltshire. Every year the village a couple of miles from there's has a Scarecrow Festival. It's lots of fun and more to come in a later post when I've got the photos from Tom's phone.

The weather was glorious, Charlie spent a lot of time in the garden with the new toys Granny and Grandad had found for him - a toddle truck and a mega block cart. We also saw my school friend's 4-month old baby girl, Freya, for the first time and Uncle Simon and Auntie Nicki joined in with the fun.

It was a lovely weekend, C-bear was very much the centre of attention and it was amazing how spending time in a different environment can help his development. With Granny and Grandad's help he can now use a shape sorter (put the circle in on his own and the rest with help), almost run whilst pushing the toddle truck up and down the garden and is grasping the concept of 'open' and 'shut'.

For the love of lists

I am the List Queen. I love them, I can't function without one and if something needs to be planned the more sub-lists the better! My job covers a wide area so I've always got 5 to 6 (or 10 to 20) things on the go so a To Do list is essential.

But even at home I need a list. I've got this week off work. Monday was the May bank holiday and Friday (tomorrow) is Charlie's baby birthday picnic, followed by his birthday bbq on Saturday. Military planning has been put in place and my lists have been essential. We've had:

Guest lists for the picnic and bbq
Food lists for what to serve at both
Sub-food list to buy the ingredients
Party decoration list
Miscellaneous extras list

Anyone else list crazy or is that just me??

(please note just by writing the list of lists above has got me frantically checking I've covered everything!!!)

When I saw the title for today, I immediately knew I couldn't thank just one person it would have to be two. My boys.

Thank you to Tom, who I fell in love with in the first week of uni, who's been with me for over eleven years and who's put up with the good and the bad. Who makes me laugh and who I share complex, silly, coupley jokes with, who has introduced me to hundreds of films, music and TV I would never have seen. Who always remembers birthdays and anniversaries, whose the perfect road trip companion and who's a wonderful Father to our boy. I don't say it enough but you were the first person to make my heart sing.

Thank you to Charlie, who has made a massive impact on my life. Who makes me laugh and smile and happy even when I'm zombie-tired. Who I can't wait to watch grow up but also miss being a newborn. Who loves me unconditionally and shows it (much to Tom's displeasure) at the best and worst times. Who, in the first second of being placed above my heart made it jump and sing and come alive.

Running (with some walking)

This morning I went running for the first time in two years! I used to run 3-4 times a week, I'd get up early and go before work, running along the river to Battersea Park. I loved the time to think, the empty silence of the early morning and challenge of pressing myself onwards and beating past achievements.

My Pilates course finished a couple of weeks ago and I've decided to step up an exercise notch. I haven't done anything proper to shift the baby weight and with a year almost gone now is the time to do it!

So this morning I went for a run. Yes it was only 20 mins, yes my muscles screamed, my legs ached, my lungs felt like they were on fire, I walked as well as jogged and I could constantly feel the wobble of my saggy baby belly but I'm so happy that I've finally taken the plunge and got out there. If you've never run it's hard to describe, but those first moments as you set off are euphoric, you feel strong and capable and natural. I was worried I'd forgotten what to do (!) wouldn't find the right pace, stumble or not make it but as soon as I got out there it felt like I'd come home. Running was a part of my life and without realising it, I've missed it. I used to do a quite complicated warm-up (taught to me by my Sports-Science degree holding cousin) and was sure I wouldn't remember it all, but each stretch led onto the next and soon I was warmed up, relaxed and raring to go.

When life is so busy just being a Mum when else do you have time to listen to your favourite tunes rather then nursery rhymes, think - really think about stuff rather then half think whilst keeping an eye on what catasrophe the baby will get into next - I spent this morning planning the flavours of cupcakes for C's birthday parties (lemon, mocha, vanilla and chocolate), deciding what outfits we should wear for the parties (C- monkey shirt and jeans, M - summer dress) and whether I should vote Yes or No in Thursday's Referendum (still not decided).
Time is an issue and I'm not sure where I will fit this into my Mummyhood timetable, but having done it today I realise how important it is to keep going so will maybe sacrifice my one day a week weekend lie in to spend my me-time more productively. Let's just see how it goes...

A Right Royal Knees Up

We've been away so I'm a five days late with this post. I'm not a massive Royals fan and there was no way I was going to venture into Central London with the little man, but I did watch it on the TV and I taught Charlie to wave a flag!

The printers at my work gave us a tongue-in-cheek Royal Wedding celebration box, so Charlie and I unpacked it, played with it and we took some of the goodies with us to visit my parents in Wiltshire.

Inside were William and Kate masks, a tea-towel, a wedding cake, fake engagement ring, trivia cards, sweets, elderflower cordial, confetti and bunting!
